Dear Readers: I’ve been away, but I’m back! I’ll be doing a weekly historical photo with a short explanation here, with more in-depth posts on my blog Past Lane Travels.
This photo was taken last week in the most memorable room in George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.
It is George and Martha Washington’s bedroom, and shows the actual bed where George Washington died on December 14, 1799 at between 10 and 11 p.m.
The bed is oversized for the period at 6 feet, 8 inches, to hold Washington’s 6-foot, 2-inch frame.
Have you visited Mount Vernon? If you have, what was the one thing that stood out to you?
I've missed your Past Lane Travels. So glad they're back. (And you, too, of course!)
I went to Mount Vernon when I was a young girl. The thing I remember the most was as I was approaching the grave, a snake was crossing the walk right in front of me!
Thanks, Katharine!
The River side of the mansion is being worked on so I couldn't sit on the porch, but they have chairs out on the lawn. The view is magnificent.
