Hello History and Travel Lovers —
I don’t know about you, but every time summer rolls around, I get the urge to jump in my Jeep, crank up the music, and hit the road with the windows down and no strict schedule in sight.
If that’s you too, I don’t blame you. There’s something magical about a road trip—the freedom to stop wherever you want, whenever you want.
See an antique store? Slam on the brakes.
Pass a historical marker? Flip a U-turn.
It’s your adventure, and you’re writing it one mile at a time.
As someone who’s always got a map in one hand and a strong cup of coffee in the other, I wanted to share a few of my favorite tips for making the most of your summer road trip—especially if you love history as much as I do.
🗺️ My Top 5 Summer Road Trip Tips for History Lovers
1. Pick a Theme
Whether it’s Revolutionary War sites, Civil War battlefields, or charming small towns, giving your trip a theme makes it way more fun (and helps narrow down where to go). Personally? I’m working on a Revolutionary Road Trip Journal for America’s 250th, so I’m chasing down old taverns, graveyards, and forgotten battlegrounds.

2. Don’t Skip the Detours
Sometimes the best stops aren’t on the map. I’ve found hidden cemeteries, family-run diners, and secret overlooks by hitting the brakes when I see an intriguing road sign.

3. Create a Flexible Itinerary
Plan just enough to know your overnight stops and must-see places—but leave room for spontaneity. I usually have trouble with this one because there is so much I want to see, I’m always in a hurry to get to the next stop… On the other hand, some of my best finds weren’t on my list, so I make adjustments when necessary.
4. Pack Like a Pro
Here’s my go-to car kit:
A cooler with water and snacks (bonus: saves money).
Printed maps in case the GPS ghosts you (yes, really).
A notebook or travel journal… because my memory is terrible!
Bug spray, sunscreen, and a mini first aid kit. (I preach, but I never have bug spray when I need it).
5. Download Podcasts or Audiobooks
I know I’m behind the times, but I just started doing this. I have a whole list of “Mindset” and “Goal-Setting” books I’ve listened to. If you want me to put them in a post sometime, hit reply and let me know. They are truly life-changing!
🚗 Where I’ve Been. Where I’m going.
I took my first trip to Oak Island, N.C. (with my dog) and took the ferry to Fort Fisher, which I have visited before. I also re-visited Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson, two must-see sites for history buffs.
I drove up to New Paltz, N.Y. to update my photos of Mohonk Mountain House. It was foggy, rainy and cloudy the whole time. No new pics, but had tons of fun. (Stay tuned: You’re going to hear a lot more about this place). On the way, I stopped at Stony Point Battlefield and Lighthouse, West Point Military Academy, and Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y.
This weekend I’m heading to historic New Castle, Del., to experience their Separation Day event. Don’t know what it is? Stay tuned! I’ll be writing about it next week!
In the meantime, I’d love to know:

☛ This Week’s “Old Word.”
Word: Gallivant (I still hear this one, but I like it)
Meaning: To roam or travel for pleasure, especially with no clear destination; to wander about seeking fun or adventure.
First Known Use: Late 18th century
Every summer, I feel the urge to gallivant across the countryside in search of old inns, hidden history, and hidden gems.
Answer to Last Week’s Trivia Quiz: Congratulations to those who guessed Blue Ridge Parkway for being known as “America’s Favorite Drive.” Most of you guessed Route 66, and I have to agree. It took me 3 hours to drive 20 miles on Route 66 because I kept stopping. It’s awesome!
This Week’s Trivia Question: Give it a try!
See you next week!
