A Hidden Gem in Wilmington, NC
Since it’s almost Independence Day, I thought I’d write about one of the most amazing colonial houses I’ve visited, the Burgwin-Wright House in Wilmington, N.C.
This beautifully preserved gem not only offers a window into life during the 18th century, but it also holds a direct connection to the Revolutionary War.
From its role as the British headquarters under Lord Cornwallis to its stunning Georgian architecture, the Burgwin-Wright House brings America’s colonial past to life in a way that’s both educational and captivating.

Step Back in Time at the Burgwin-Wright House
Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House is a rare colonial residence that stands as a direct link to the American Revolution.
Originally constructed atop the stone foundation of a 1744 jail, the house was used by Lord Cornwallis as his headquarters during the British occupation of Wilmington in 1781.
Visitors can step into the house's beautifully preserved rooms, where period furnishings and original architecture tell the story of colonial life.

While touring, you'll also see the former jail cells and colonial kitchen, offering a unique look into life during the Revolutionary War.
And don't miss the gardens—spread across two-thirds of an acre, they feature seven distinct areas that showcase 18th-century life, including an orchard, herb garden, and kitchen garden.
