I really have a treat for you this week! The beautiful Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY is a one-of-a-kind resort that makes Nature part of the experience.
Can you see why?
For a brief history, the Mohonk Mountain House began in 1869 when Albert Smiley paid $28,000 for a lake and 300 acres of rocky land that included a modest 10-room tavern.
As you can see, he made some additions over the years!
The Interior
Since I love history, I was also enthralled by the inside!
There is ornate woodwork, fireplaces, and dozens of nooks and crannies filled with comfortable Victorian furniture.
Central Stairs
The main stairway is an architectural marvel, which has 1,411 hand-tooled spindles from the 1890s.
Nature. Nature. Nature.
I walked between seven and ten miles every day (plus rode a horse a few miles), and still didn’t get to see everything.
If you go, plan to spend more than a few days because the daily event calendar is full of things like yoga, tomahawk throwing and dozens of other activities depending on the season. (From swimming and boating to ice skating and snow tubing).
Historic Gem
To sum up Mohonk in two words, I would say History and Nature. The outside is simply magnificent, and every corner inside is filled with historic gems and special touches.
The afternoon Tea and Cookie hour is a tradition that has been carried on for generations, and is a special treat for guests.
The Views
The picturesque landscape is stunning in every direction and around every turn.
The photo above is of Sunset Porch. There are plenty of chairs to watch the daily show of the sun sinking below the mountaintops.
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse at Mohonk Mountain House. For those who can’t spend the night, they also offer a Day Pass, so you can experience the trails and scenery.
