While most Gettysburg visitors come for the history and to tour the Gettysburg Battlefields, there is a lot more to see and explore in the area.
For instance, just eight miles west of Gettysburg, nestled among acres of apple, cherry and peach orchards is a Historic Round Barn that stands as an icon of America’s agricultural past—and a symbol of the present.
Built in 1914, the Round Barn has withstood the test of time.
In 1993, a Farm Market opened in the barn selling the local harvest of apples, peaches, pears, plums, nectarines, apricots, berries, sweet cherries, sweet corn, pumpkins, gourds and vegetables—among other delicious food items.
The Market
Fresh fruit is a big part of the Farm Market at the Round Barn, but there is so much more!
Coffee, sauces, jellies, bread mixes, candy, snacks, baked goods and cheese to name a few!
Handmade Items Galore
And the Farm Market at the Round Barn doesn’t stop there. They also carry a large variety of handcrafted locally made items, including baskets, recipe books, candles and woodcrafts.
The Round Barn By The Numbers
The circumference of the barn is 282 feet, with a diameter of over 87 feet. As a characteristic of many round barns, this barn is constructed around a central silo measuring 60 feet high as 12 feet wide, with a storage capacity of 145 tons of silage.
The silo acts as a "hub" with 38 spokes that form the interior structure and support for the second floor. As originally constructed, the barn could house 50 heads of cattle and about 16 horses or mules.
The interior of the barn is an architectural marvel. The upstairs is available to rent for weddings and other special events.
If you can’t make it to the Round Barn in person, they have an Online Store.
